According to PayNXT360, the cashback market in Germany is expected to grow by 12.8% annually, reaching US$4,242.2 million by 2026. The cashback market in the country has experienced robust growth during 2021-2025, achieving a CAGR of 14.5%. This upward trajectory is expected to continue, with the market forecast to grow at a CAGR of 11.4% from 2026 to 2030. By the end of 2030, the cashback market is projected to expand from its 2025 value of US$3,761.7 million to approximately US$6,532.8 million. Key Trends and Drivers Digital-bank cashback is becoming more aggressive at acquisition - but more tightly time-boxed • BBVA has materially intensified cashback competition in German banking during 2026. When the bank entered Germany in June 2025, its debit-card proposition included 3% cashback on purchases for the first 12 months. The current acquisition offer has been restructured to 3.5% cashback for six months, applied to up to €350 of debit-card purchases per month and credited directly to the current account. More importantly, BBVA expanded cashback into a second card product in June 2026: its new German credit card launched with 5% cashback on online purchases and selected travel spending for six months, capped at €150. The recent change is therefore not simply a higher cashback rate; BBVA has moved from one broad debit-card incentive toward a shorter-duration, multi-product and category-targeted cashback strategy. • The economics are being supported by a much larger pool of card transactions over which banks can compete for primary-payment status. Bundesbank payment statistics show that cards issued by German payment service providers were used for about 14.5 billion payments in 2025, 11% more than in 2024, while the Bundesbank's consumer study found that more than half of everyday purchases were cashless for the first time. BBVA is consequently using cashback not as a stand-alone rewards feature but as an activation mechanism around both debit and credit cards: the debit offer starts with first card use, while its new credit-card cashback specifically promotes online and travel transactions. • Financial-services cashback is likely to remain a customer-acquisition battleground, particularly among digital banks and direct-bank card propositions, but the BBVA restructuring suggests that competition will not necessarily translate into permanently higher flat cashback rates. Limited eligibility periods, monthly spending ceilings and category targeting allow issuers to concentrate cashback expenditure around account opening, card activation and strategically valuable transactions. Germany is therefore likely to see more introductory and category-based cashback, while uncapped permanent cashback remains comparatively difficult to justify commercially. Visa is converting cashback from isolated promotions into a persistent card-linked layer • Visa has changed how it distributes cashback in Germany. Its September–October 2025 promotion was an individual campaign offering 3% cashback on qualifying online payments after card registration. Visa has introduced Visa Bonus, a persistent program in which users register once, can store up to five eligible Visa debit or credit cards, and then activate successive cashback campaigns through the same account. Current campaigns include 2% cashback on qualifying foreign transactions during summer 2026 and a separate 2% online-payment campaign scheduled for September–November. Visa itself explicitly contrasts the model with its previous recurring stand-alone promotions, under which consumers had to register again. • The new infrastructure becomes more useful as international scheme cards gain importance in German e-commerce and mobile payments. The Bundesbank noted in December 2025 that international schemes such as Visa and Mastercard are becoming more significant in the German debit-card segment partly because they support online, cross-border and mobile-wallet payments, while direct banks increasingly issue them as standard cards. A persistent card-linked platform lets Visa reuse registered payment credentials across multiple campaigns rather than rebuilding consumer enrolment for each promotion, creating a stronger foundation for transaction-specific and potentially merchant- or category-targeted cashback. • Visa's change points toward greater cashback frequency rather than simply higher cashback percentages. Its 2025 online campaign offered 3%, whereas the two announced Visa Bonus campaigns in 2026 use 2% rates but sit within a reusable program capable of supporting repeated campaigns. This should increase the role of card-linked cashback in Germany because individual issuers do not need to operate a proprietary cashback proposition for their customers to participate. Over time, campaign differentiation can increasingly come from transaction category, geography, merchant participation and timing rather than a single permanent flat rate. Cooperative banks are bringing merchant-funded cashback directly into everyday banking • Merchant-funded cashback has moved closer to the banking interface within Germany's cooperative banking sector. MeinPlus and Atruvia began integrating the MeinPlus Wallet into the VR Banking App in December 2025, with a broader rollout to participating Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken announced in January 2026. Cashback balances can now be displayed alongside normal banking activity and update automatically after eligible payments. MeinPlus also supports cashback at participating local and online merchants, with accumulated monetary balances available for payout to the customer's account. The change reduces the separation between a third-party cashback platform and the bank's everyday digital experience. • The model gives both banks and merchants an economic role. MeinPlus's partner terms specify that participating merchants provide the funds used for cashback and determine the applicable cashback rate, while qualifying transactions are identified through participating VR-Bank payment instruments. For merchants, this creates a payment-linked customer-acquisition channel without requiring a separate consumer loyalty card; for cooperative banks, embedding the wallet in the VR Banking App makes those merchant-funded benefits visible at the bank's main digital customer touchpoint. This structure is particularly relevant in Germany, where the girocard remains the country's most widely used debit card. • This model should strengthen merchant-funded and card-linked cashback distributed through financial institutions, rather than requiring banks themselves to finance every reward. The competitive boundary between “financial-services cashback” and “retailer cashback” will consequently become less distinct: banks provide the authenticated customer relationship and payment rails, while merchants finance individual cashback offers. If the rollout expands across additional cooperative banks and partners, the model can increase cashback issuance without requiring permanently richer issuer-funded card economics, while improving regional merchants' ability to participate in digital cashback programs. Trade Republic is linking cashback more tightly with investing and the source of card funding • Trade Republic added a new cashback variant in November 2025 when it introduced crypto-funded card payments. Its existing model provides 1% Save back on eligible cash-funded card spending, automatically invested into a selected savings plan. The new Crypto Wallet allows customers to fund Trade Republic Card purchases from crypto holdings and receive 2% Crypto Save back, with eligible spending capped at €1,500 per month. The cashback is again reinvested rather than simply left as a conventional card statement credit. This introduces a differentiated reward rate based on how the transaction is funded and further connects payments, cashback and investment activity within one German financial-services app. • Trade Republic is using cashback as part of its expansion from brokerage toward a broader wealth-management and payments relationship. Its November 2025 announcement explicitly positioned the Crypto Wallet as part of that transition and linked crypto spending to the existing card and savings-plan ecosystem. Regulatory infrastructure also matters: Trade Republic states that its crypto services operate within a regulated banking environment under the EU's MiCA framework. At the same time, Germany's continued shift toward card and mobile payments gives app-based financial providers more everyday transactions through which investment-linked rewards can be generated. • Investment-linked cashback is likely to remain smaller than conventional euro-denominated cashback, but Trade Republic's change broadens the competitive toolkit available to German fintechs. Rewards can increasingly be conditional, customizable by funding source and directed automatically into another financial product, making cashback a mechanism for cross-selling and asset accumulation rather than only a purchase rebate. However, the crypto element is unlikely to replace ordinary card cashback: Trade Republic notes that crypto-funded payments constitute a disposal of the crypto asset and can have tax consequences, while crypto values remain volatile. The more transferable implication for competitors is therefore the integration of cashback with savings. Competitive Landscape Over the next 2–4 years, competition is likely to intensify but become more targeted rather than simply more generous. German-issued card payments increased 11% in 2025, expanding the transaction base over which cashback providers can compete. However, recent programs rely heavily on spending caps, limited promotional periods, selected categories or merchant funding. This favours card-linked offers, bank-app integration and personalised merchant campaigns while limiting the economics of permanently high flat-rate cashback. Current State of the Market • Germany’s cashback market is becoming more fragmented across financial-services, card-linked and affiliate models, rather than being led by a single channel. The most visible recent change is stronger competition from banks and payment networks: BBVA is using directly credited cashback for customer acquisition, Visa has moved from one-off campaigns to the reusable Visa Bonus platform, and Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken are embedding MeinPlus merchant-funded cashback into everyday banking. Affiliate platforms such as ShopBack and mycashbacks remain active in e-commerce, meaning competitive pressure is shifting from standalone cashback websites toward cashback embedded in cards, banking apps and payment relationships. Key Players and New Entrants • Verified participants now span several models: BBVA in debit- and credit-card cashback; Trade Republic with investment-linked Saveback; Visa with card-linked cashback campaigns; MeinPlus/Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken with merchant-funded cashback; and ShopBack and mycashbacks in affiliate/e-commerce cashback. BBVA is the clearest recent challenger in banking, having launched its first German credit card in June 2026 with introductory cashback alongside its debit-card offer. Recent Launches, Partnerships, Mergers, and Acquisitions • Competitive activity has centred on launches, integration and restructuring rather than cashback-specific M&A. Visa introduced Visa Bonus with reusable card registration and successive cashback campaigns; MeinPlus and Atruvia began rolling cashback into the VR Banking App; and Trade Republic expanded Saveback to crypto-funded spending. Separately, GETMORE states that its existing cashback service is being progressively wound down through 2028, while a new independent program, payou.de, is planned, which is not yet live.
