In order to incentivize individuals to help in gathering recyclable materials, various states and counties in the United States, as well as private entities, are offering gift cards for the individuals. For instance,

  • In February 2022, the government of Orange County declared to offer gift cards through a game for the residents who will practice proper recycling habits for two weeks. Individuals can either win a US$50 gift card to the local farmers' market or a US$50 VISA gift card through the game.
    • The county, in particular, developed the Orange Star Recycling Program to create awareness among the residents about recycling contaminants and to inject proper recycling habits. The program is executed through the assessment of the collection of materials by the inspectors. If the recycling cart has containments such as plastic bags, glass, etc., it will be not be collected, and the cart confiscation warning given to the residents, while if it is free of containment, it will be labeled with an orange star and pickup will occur at the regular time.
  • Similarly, in January 2022, the government of the City of Coral Springs introduced a reward program for the residents who have curbside recycling and carry out the activity properly. Notably, the residents have to register for the program and use a blue roll-out cart to dispose of the materials. Randomly, the blue cart will be checked on the collection day, and the resident will be awarded US$ 25 gift card on passing the review.
  • Moreover, in February 2022, the United States-based recycling company, Replenysh launched a rewards program for those individuals who will "check in" while dropping off materials for recycling. Each individual will receive a US$5 Walmart gift card for every five check-ins. Also, the company, for each check-in, donates money for the planting of a tree. Notably, the company will be onboarding more brands on its platform and intends to expand the reward program in Bartlesville to attract more individuals.
    • Replenysh offers the provision of organizations or individuals to volunteer the program as host or collection site where the members can deliver the materials. Then the company sells the sorted materials from the host to the manufacturers and partly shares the profit with the host.
    • Around 830 individuals signed up for the program in Bartlesville, and the company targets to recycle 40,000 pounds of material in February 2022. On achieving the goal, Replenysh will be donating US$1,000 to the NGO Bartlesville Regional United Way.
